It was an ordinary Saturday afternoon on Interstate 71—until a vehicle suddenly left the roadway, turning a routine drive into a scene of devastation.
Around 3:15 p.m. on August 15, a single-vehicle crash unfolded in the southbound lanes of I-71 between Pearl Road and Royalton Road in Strongsville, according to police.
Three people were inside the vehicle when it veered from the interstate and came to rest in a ditch.
Then came the emergency response.
Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, ambulances and medical helicopters rushed to the scene as crews worked urgently to reach those trapped in the aftermath.
Inside the wreckage were 20-year-old Heaven Hennings and 19-year-old Caiden Ozanich, both of Cleveland.
Hennings was transported to a hospital by ambulance, but despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead.
Ozanich never made it that far. He died at the crash scene.
The driver, 20-year-old I’saic Pace of Cleveland, suffered multiple injuries and was flown to a hospital for treatment.
For hours, the interstate became the center of a massive emergency operation, with part of I-71 shut down as investigators and first responders worked at the scene.
But amid the flashing lights and unanswered questions, two families were beginning to face an unimaginable reality.
Heaven Hennings was just 20.
Caiden Ozanich was only 19.
Their lives had barely begun, yet in a matter of moments, everything changed.
Authorities have not released the circumstances that caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, leaving questions surrounding the crash unanswered.
For the families and friends of Heaven and Caiden, however, the greatest questions may never ease the pain of their loss.
They are now left with photographs, memories, shared moments and the echoes of lives that ended far too soon.
