KEARNS, Utah — It was supposed to be a day of mourning.
Inside and around a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stake center in Kearns, family and friends had gathered Monday to say goodbye to 23-year-old Ofa’tangikivaha Angilau, a young man whose life had already been cut short by gunfire.
Instead, the funeral became the setting for another shooting.
And before the day was over, one more person would be dead and two others would be fighting for their lives.
The sequence of events unfolded rapidly, leaving investigators, witnesses and an already grieving community facing a disturbing question: How could a funeral become another scene of deadly violence?
Police Were Already Waiting
The warning came before the first shot.
According to the Unified Police Department, authorities had received multiple calls ahead of the funeral suggesting there could be a “problem.” Officers were therefore already at the stake center at 5015 South 4620 West when the sound of gunfire suddenly shattered the gathering.
The officers did not have to be called to the scene.

Then came the gunshots.
Outside the church, officers discovered one victim lying in the roadway. Emergency crews rushed the injured person to a hospital, but the victim later died.
Inside the church, another victim was found and transported for medical treatment.
A third person was reportedly seen being placed into a vehicle that sped away from the area.

Officers chased the fleeing vehicle until they were able to box it in near the intersection of 4700 South and 4000 West in West Valley City.
Two of the shooting victims were ultimately transported to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray in critical condition, according to the information provided.

The funeral was reportedly for Angilau, who was killed in a shooting at a Riverton gas station on Aug. 7.
Unified Police did not immediately confirm that the service was for Angilau, but a funeral flyer circulating in connection with the event identified him as the person being remembered.

Under secure protocols, school doors are locked and people are not permitted to enter or leave the buildings, while normal activities continue inside. Parents are advised not to come to the schools while the protocols are in effect.
The precautions were lifted shortly before 12:30 p.m.

What had begun as a private gathering to mourn a young man had suddenly become a public safety emergency affecting schools, roads, hospitals and neighborhoods.
Hospital Takes Extraordinary Precautions
The consequences also reached Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.
Because of the shooting, the hospital closed its campus and canceled all appointments Monday as a precautionary measure.
A hospital spokesperson said patients and employees were safe and faced no threat.
The decision illustrated the extent to which the violence had reverberated beyond the original scene. With critically injured victims being transported to the medical center, officials moved quickly to protect patients, staff and the public.
